Medical assistant certification in Kansas

Read the official rule (K.S.A. 65-2872(g); K.S.A. 65-28,127; K.S.A. 65-7304(f))

Kansas has no state license or certificate for medical assistants, so you can do this work without a state credential. The physician who supervises you shapes what you may do, and x-ray work adds one yearly education rule.

  • X-rays: Allowed without a license when you're supervised, trained and finishing 12 continuing education credits yearly

No state certificate required

The Kansas Healing Arts Act says work done under a licensed practitioner's supervision or order does not count as practicing the healing arts. That is the legal reason Kansas medical assistants can work without a state license.

There is one firm boundary. The Board of Healing Arts says a person using this exception cannot call themselves a physician or bill like one.

What can a physician delegate to you?

Delegating means a physician passes a task to you while still answering for it. State law spells out the conditions for delegation:

  • The physician currently practices the healing arts in Kansas.
  • The physician knows, or has good reason to think, you can handle the task competently.
  • The task does not violate another law or rule.
  • The task fits the physician's normal specialty and abilities.

If your physician is away for a time, a qualified substitute licensee must take responsibility for your work. Your duties can differ from clinic to clinic, since they follow each physician's specialty and how that physician rates your abilities.

X-ray rules for medical assistants

To take x-rays, Kansas generally asks for a radiologic technology license issued by the Board of Healing Arts. You may go without it when you work under a licensed practitioner, or a person a licensed hospital designates, and you have been taught to operate the equipment correctly.

By continuing education, we mean brief courses you keep up once you've begun working. To qualify for the x-ray exemption, you need 12 of these credits each year, covering the x-ray operator subjects listed in K.A.R. 28-35-256, a Kansas regulation. The law also tells the Board to write rules so exempt workers receive that training.

Does a training program still make sense?

With the state uninvolved, each employer decides what preparation and national certification to expect. A program gives a physician good reason to trust you with delegated work, exactly the confidence the law looks for.

Accreditation means an outside organization, CAAHEP or ABHES, has examined the program. Our site lists 1,094 medical assistant programs, and 484 of them hold accreditation.

Online medical assistant training

With an online program, your classes happen at home, though the externship still takes place face to face. An externship means supervised, hands-on practice inside a real clinic. Nationwide, 30 programs allow you to complete every class through distance education, with 14 of those holding accreditation.
