- Schools
- Schools with medical assistant graduates in the 2023-24 school year, from the U.S. Department of Education's yearly college survey, plus the programs CAAHEP lists.
- Accredited
- Programs checked and approved by an outside group: CAAHEP, which approves the program itself, or ABHES, which approves the whole school. Finishing a CAAHEP program lets you take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam; at an ABHES school, ask whether its medical assistant program is covered too.
- Prices
- The typical 2023-24 price in the state, in two groups: career schools that give one price for the whole program, and public colleges, which give the price of one year of full-time classes for local students. A dash means too few schools gave a price.
Wherever you live, you can also look at the accredited online programs.

Is a license or certificate required?
Certification is optional in most states, though many employers prefer it or ask for it. In some states you must complete an accredited program, hold a license or certificate, or meet other rules.
Washington requires a state certificate or registration for medical assistants who work in healthcare facilities. California has no state license or certificate requirement.
