Once a year, with each new IPEDS release

Each program on the site is listed by CAAHEP, or it belongs to a school that reported its medical assistant graduates to IPEDS, the college data system run by the U.S. Department of Education. Schools report the cost and graduate numbers to IPEDS, and we use those figures. We check accreditation in the public CAAHEP and ABHES directories. The CMA (AAMA) exam is open to graduates of a medical assisting program that CAAHEP or ABHES accredits, so at an ABHES school, ask whether the program itself is covered. The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides the pay data.

Building each listing

1. We start from every school that reported medical assistant graduates for July 2023 to June 2024, and add each program CAAHEP lists.
2. A row says CAAHEP accredited only when the CAAHEP directory lists that program at that school.
3. ABHES approves whole schools, so a row at an ABHES school says so, and we suggest asking whether the medical assisting program is covered.
4. Each price is the 2023-24 price the school reported, marked as the whole program or one year. The graduate count is the certificates and degrees it awarded that year.

Once a year, when IPEDS releases new files, we update our lists and check both accreditor directories.
