Who decides a medical assistant's duties in Missouri?

No Missouri law governs medical assistants. State law says only a registered physician can practice medicine, so your duties flow from whatever the physician delegates to you. In other words, you work under the physician's authority, doing the tasks they trust you with.

That trust is a real risk for the physician. Handing work to someone who lacks the training, skill or competency for it can bring discipline for unprofessional conduct. That is why physicians want evidence you have been trained, and completing a program is a straightforward way to prove it.

X-ray work as a medical assistant

Missouri has no license or permit for taking x-rays, so you cannot be required to hold one. It is one of 5 states without any statewide licensing for x-ray operators.

In practice, the physician running the facility largely judges whether you are competent to use the equipment. Plenty of hospitals and clinics go further, with their own rule that x-ray machines may be run only by physicians, ARRT technologists or students. ARRT is the nationwide registry for radiologic technologists, people trained specifically in imaging. Where that policy exists, a medical assistant cannot take x-rays no matter what the state permits.

Mammography works differently. Anyone operating that equipment must hold ARRT registration and complete added instruction required by state rule 19 CSR 30-11.050.

Might Missouri license x-ray operators someday?

Back in 2019, S.B. 275 created the Joint Task Force on Radiologic Technologist Licensure for mapping out a licensing plan. That plan was meant to cover how limited x-ray machine operators would be licensed, along with other imaging roles. If taking x-rays is something you want in your job, keep an eye on this.

Picking a program when certification is optional

Since the physician decides your duties, the training behind you counts for a lot. Accreditation means an outside body, CAAHEP or ABHES, has reviewed a program against fixed standards for what it teaches. Among the 1,094 medical assistant programs in our national list, 484 carry accreditation.

Use these national numbers to compare programs:

Online medical assistant programs

Across the country, 30 programs can be finished through distance education, and 14 of those are accredited. Classes happen online, though the externship happens face to face. An externship is supervised hands-on practice in a working clinic, where you work with patients before graduating.

First steps in Missouri

  1. Go through the Missouri medical assistant programs and mark which ones are accredited, because physicians consider your training when they delegate.
  2. Decide whether you need to attend in person or whether distance education classes with an in-person externship will work.
  3. Choose one accredited program and send its "Request information" form, which reaches only that school.
