Medical assistant certification in Oregon

Read the official rule (Oregon Medical Board Statement of Philosophy, Use of Unlicensed Healthcare Personnel / ORS 688.415)

  • Medical assistant state license: None
  • Certification required by the state: No
  • X-ray work: Calls for a limited x-ray machine operator (LXMO) permit
  • Renewing the x-ray permit: Every 2 years, plus 18 hours of continuing education

In Oregon, you don't need certification to work as a medical assistant, and the state issues no license. Employers can hire you and train you right on the job, while the physician you work with decides which duties you're prepared to handle. Taking x-rays is the single exception, since that calls for a separate state permit.

Do you need a state license to work as a medical assistant in Oregon?

No. There's no Oregon law covering medical assistants and no license from the state. The Oregon Medical Board views medical assistants as unlicensed healthcare personnel working under a physician or physician assistant.

With no license in place, what you've learned and done is what proves to an employer that you're prepared.

What your supervising doctor decides

Delegation is when a doctor passes a task to you but stays accountable for it. The Board's guidance says the physician or physician assistant has to confirm you're qualified and competent for whatever they assign. It's also up to them to decide if your education, training and experience measure up.

The Board offers 2 examples of what good supervision looks like:

  • Before you administer a medication, the doctor verifies the drug and the dose.
  • The doctor is on site in the building during your work.

You must also be easy to recognize as a medical assistant. In practice, that means a name tag showing your title and using that title when you greet patients.

Tasks outside a medical assistant's role

Oregon medical assistants can't exercise their own medical judgment. According to the Board, assessments, interpreting results, diagnosing and invasive procedures are all off limits for you.

Where a doctor dispenses medication in the office, the Oregon Medical Practice Act allows only the no-judgment parts of that dispensing to be handed over. Checking the prescription stays with the doctor.

Taking x-rays in Oregon

You need a state credential to operate an x-ray machine. Under ORS 688.415, no one may work as a limited x-ray machine operator unless they hold a valid permit. People often call this an LXMO permit, and the Board of Medical Imaging grants it for work supervised by a physician, a nurse practitioner or a physician associate.

Only certain body areas fall under the permit:

  • Skull and sinuses
  • Chest
  • Spine
  • Feet and ankles
  • Arms and legs
  • Bone density scans

The Board of Medical Imaging lists these steps for getting a permanent permit:

  1. Complete a limited x-ray course approved by the Board.
  2. Apply for a temporary permit, which covers you during clinical training.
  3. Pass the ARRT exam.
  4. Apply to the Board for your permanent permit.

Keeping the x-ray permit current

Your permanent permit is good for 2 years. Continuing education is short coursework you do once you're on the job so your skills stay fresh. For renewal, the Board asks for 18 hours of it, with 4 of those hours on radiation use and safety.
