There is no state medical assistant certification in Wyoming, so no state credential stands between you and the job. No statute in the state licenses, certifies or registers medical assistants. Good training is what shows a doctor you're qualified, so start on our Wyoming programs page, pick an accredited school, and send it the short Request information form today. Your tasks depend on what a physician can safely delegate to you. Taking x-rays has a separate licensing requirement.

Is certification required for medical assistants in Wyoming?
It is not. Rather than license medical assistants, the Wyoming Medical Practice Act directs the Board of Medicine to create standards for physicians who hand medical work over to nonphysicians. Delegation is when a doctor passes a medical task to you while staying answerable for how it gets done.
No exam or program for medical assistants is named anywhere in Wyoming law. What the law does expect is that whoever performs the work is qualified to do it.
What the doctor is responsible for when you take on tasks
State law allows a physician to face discipline when they don't properly oversee the medical work they delegate to you.
Discipline can also follow when a physician delegates to a person who lacks the training, experience or licensure to qualify. Every task has to fall inside the specialty areas where you and the doctor both have training and experience.
X-ray work in Wyoming clinics
X-rays are the exception: to take them, you need a Wyoming license. Under the x-ray law, taking x-rays without a Wyoming license counts as a misdemeanor, and the penalty can reach 6 months in jail, a fine as high as $750 or both.
The law exempts licensed practitioners, plus dental personnel who take x-rays in dental offices and podiatry assistants with training. Medical assistants employed by physicians get no exemption, which means a license has to come before your first x-ray.
The restricted radiologic technician license
Finishing a full radiologic technologist program is not required before you take x-rays. A restricted license covers a smaller scope, letting you x-ray no more than 3 body areas while following the specific direction of a licensed prescriber.
This license comes from the Board of Radiologic Technologist Examiners, which was created in 1985. The board offers a restricted license packet designed for people who never went through a radiologic technologist program. To qualify, you must be at least 18 and capable of working as a radiologic technician.
- Download the restricted license packet from the forms section of the board's website.
- Take the exam the board arranges for restricted license applicants.
- Renew every 12 months.
Each renewal calls for 6 hours of continuing education credits that follow ARRT standards.
Program length, cost and pay
With no state rule in place, solid training helps show a doctor that you qualify. The numbers below come from schools across the country, using 2023-24 federal school data plus national pay figures from May 2025.
| Topic | Figure |
|---|---|
| How long career school programs usually take | 9 months |
| Range from the shortest to the longest program | 2 months to 32 months |
| What a full career school program typically costs | $17,257 |
| What public colleges typically charge per year in tuition and fees | $4,346 |
| What medical assistants earn at the median | $45,690 yearly, about $21.97 hourly |
Career school programs mostly run 7 to 9 months, with 257 of them in that range. The public college figure covers one year of full-time study, not a whole program.
Is an accredited program worth choosing?
We list 1,094 programs nationwide, and 484 of them are CAAHEP-accredited or offered at ABHES-accredited schools. Wyoming doesn't require accreditation, but an accredited program has been checked by an outside group, which gives a doctor a clear reason to trust your training.
Of the programs we list, 1,049 are at schools that take part in federal student aid. Compare accredited programs on our Wyoming programs page.
Studying online in Wyoming
Across the programs we list nationwide, 30 offer classes by distance education; 14 are accredited. You take the classes online, while the hands-on clinical practice, usually called an externship, happens face to face at a clinic. Pick a program whose in-person hours you can get to, and send that school the short Request information form today so you can line up your start date.
