How many openings come up each year?
New Hampshire's labor agency expects roughly 420 medical assistant openings annually. Newly created posts count toward that total, as do positions that open when workers retire or leave for other reasons.
That places the state 43rd of 51 for annual openings. Growth is a brighter story: the agency projects the field growing from 3,000 jobs in 2024 to 3,420 in 2034, an increase of 14.2%. Nationally, the expected rise is 12.5%. For that growth, New Hampshire ranks 28th of 51.
Does this job need a license in New Hampshire?
Not in this state. Medical assistants are not mentioned anywhere in New Hampshire law, and the Board of Medicine currently has no policy covering them. Instead, you work under the license of the physician who supervises you, so you cannot diagnose, treat, or prescribe on your own. The state medical practice law explains the rules.
One exception does apply. If your job includes taking x-rays, you must hold a limited x-ray machine operator license issued by the OPLC. Getting one means finishing an approved course, passing an exam and working with direct supervision.
Because the state sets no rule, the training you need depends on the employer. Choosing an accredited program is a clear way to show you trained to a respected standard.
Medical assistant training in New Hampshire
New Hampshire has 3 schools with medical assistant programs, and none is accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. Accreditation means an outside organisation has reviewed the program against a published standard, and those two bodies handle accreditation for medical assistant programs. Any school can be looked up on the federal College Navigator.
You can also choose a program that offers classes by distance education. Nationally, 30 programs can be finished that way, and 14 of those hold accreditation. Your supervised clinical practice, known as a practicum or externship, always happens in person at a clinic or office regardless.
National figures help you judge what is normal when comparing programs:
| What to compare | Typical figure |
|---|---|
| Total cost of a career school program (tuition, fees and books) | Median $17,257 |
| Annual in-district tuition and fees at public colleges | Median $4,346 |
| Program length at career schools | Median 9 months (range 2 to 32) |
Programs at career schools usually run 7 to 9 months. Of the 378 that give a length, 257 fall inside that span, 19 finish in 6 months or fewer, and 43 stretch beyond 12 months, according to federal data. This site lists 1,094 programs, and 1,049 sit at schools that participate in federal student aid.
