Does Texas require a medical assistant license?

You do not need one. Texas does not license or credential medical assistants. The arrangement relies on physician delegation, where a doctor assigns particular duties to you and keeps responsibility for them.

There are 2 restrictions worth knowing:

  • Taking x-rays calls for approved training plus your name appearing on the Texas Medical Board's registry for that type of work.
  • Since a 2025 law, elective IV therapy given away from a doctor's office may be handed only to registered nurses, physician assistants or advanced practice nurses, not to medical assistants.

Where to train for this work in Texas

Our list covers 70 Texas schools which share the number of medical assistant graduates with the federal government. Among them, 33 offer accredited programs. Accreditation means an outside organization, CAAHEP or ABHES, has reviewed the program and confirmed it meets their standards.

Nationally, students in career school programs finish in a median of 9 months. The median published price for the entire program runs $17,257, covering tuition, fees and books. For public colleges, full-time students from the district pay a median of $4,346 each year in tuition and fees.

Some programs allow distance learning for classes. Even so, the externship happens on site. The supervised clinical practice takes place in person, even when classes are online.
