Duties Alaska allows and limits

Under Alaska's medical rules, a doctor may not delegate certain tasks to a medical assistant. Some of them are giving IV therapy, checking on patients, and relaying spoken prescription orders.

If a doctor asks you to give an injection, it must be a single shot given into the muscle, into the skin, or just below the skin, and the doctor or another provider must stay on site while you administer it.

Nursing regulations add another requirement. An advanced practice nurse (APRN) may delegate injections only to a certified medical assistant who keeps a national certification.
