Growth outlook through 2034
The state's labor agency forecasts that medical assistant positions will grow from 10,390 positions in 2024 to a projected 11,610 in 2034. That works out to 11.7% growth, just under the 12.5% predicted nationwide, based on state projections.
Openings come from two sources: roles that are newly created and workers who leave the field. Added together, that produces about 1,430 openings per year. Connecticut places 29th out of 51 for yearly openings and 38th out of 51 for growth.
Roughly 6 out of every 1,000 jobs statewide belong to this occupation. By total number of these positions, Connecticut ranks 29th of 51.
Is certification required for medical assistants in Connecticut?
One task requires it: administering vaccines. Certification involves passing an exam from a national organization, and in Connecticut that exam must come from one of these groups: AAMA, NHA, NCCT, AMT or AMCA, per the state health department.
A clinical medical assistant who gives vaccines must also meet these conditions:
- Finish an accredited program, or complete medical assistant training in the military
- Complete 24 hours of classroom study and 8 hours of clinical practice on vaccines
- Administer vaccines only outside hospitals, because medical assistants cannot vaccinate in a hospital
Here, an accredited program means one that an outside organization has reviewed against established standards. Another rule shapes the job: x-ray equipment may only be operated by licensed radiographers, so that task is off the job description for medical assistants in Connecticut.
Since the vaccine requirement depends on an accredited program, picking one from the beginning makes sense. You can contact an accredited school using the short Request information form found on our Connecticut program page.

Nationwide, 30 programs are available by distance education aside from the in-person practice, and 14 of those hold accreditation.
