Is Minnesota hiring?

Yes, and the number of positions is set to grow. Minnesota's labor agency forecasts a rise from 11,740 jobs in 2024 to 13,610 in 2034, an increase of 15.9% (state projections). The national figure is 12.5%, so Minnesota outpaces it, ranking 24 of 51 for growth.

Each year, the agency expects around 1,690 openings. That total covers brand new roles as well as positions vacated by people who leave or retire. On yearly openings, Minnesota ranks 28 of 51.

Does Minnesota require a license for medical assistants?

No. The state offers no certification for medical assistants, and the occupation doesn't appear in state law. A national certification is available but not required. If you want to pursue it, look for a program that prepares you for the exam.

Your daily duties depend on what your physician delegates to you. Delegation happens when a doctor passes a task along and keeps responsibility for supervising it. Under the state's drug law, the people named for giving delegated medicines include nurses, medical students and residents. Medical assistants aren't listed. To take X-rays, you must pass the limited scope exam offered by the Minnesota Department of Health.

Where to train in Minnesota

Our site lists 11 Minnesota schools that report graduate numbers to the federal IPEDS survey. Six of these schools offer an accredited program. Accreditation means an outside body, either CAAHEP or ABHES, has reviewed the program against established standards.

How long a program takes varies. Among career schools nationwide that report program length, most take 7 to 9 months, and the median is 9 months. These costs are national figures too:

Kind of schoolMedian published cost
Career school, full program including books and fees$17,257
Public college, one year of full-time study for in-district students$4,346

Distance education is an option at some programs. Even then, the clinical practice, usually called an externship, happens face to face. An externship puts you in a working clinic under supervision, applying what you learned in class.
