Medical assistant scope of practice in Indiana

In Indiana, the medical assistant scope of practice covers the tasks a physician assigns, provided that physician directs the work and supervises it. There is no fixed list of duties for medical assistants in Indiana. What you may do depends on what your employing physician delegates, plus a few clear limits.

  • Who may hand over tasks: the physician who employs you
  • Supervision: needed for every task that is delegated
  • Never permitted: diagnosing or prescribing treatment
  • Medications: only on the specific order of that physician

Delegation under Indiana law

Delegation happens when a physician gives a task to someone else and keeps responsibility for it. Under Indiana's medical practice exemption, a physician's employee may perform acts that are customarily part of that physician's practice. That applies only when the employee works under the direction and supervision of the physician.

The tasks you perform depend on the physician you work for. What counts as routine in one practice may fall outside what a different physician does.

Supervision by the physician who employs you

Your supervising physician must direct and oversee every delegated act, as the Indiana wording states. This rule does not apply to tasks carried out alone or for a physician who does not employ you.

Injections in Indiana: what a medical assistant may do

Yes, outpatient settings fall within this, based on legal counsel from the AAMA, which is the national association for medical assistants. That advice reads the Indiana wording as letting physicians hand over shots given into muscle, into skin, or under the skin, including vaccinations. In plain terms, these are injections.

The same opinion also addresses venipuncture, which is drawing blood from a vein. Inside a clinic or doctor's office, your physician may delegate blood draws to you.

Giving medication

Medication cannot be given without the specific order of the physician on whose staff you work. A general instruction will not do: the order has to come from that physician.

Tasks a medical assistant may never do in Indiana

Certain tasks remain off limits regardless of who requests them. Staff members may not diagnose or prescribe treatment. And physicians cannot hand over:

  • work that counts as the practice of medicine
  • work that law reserves for certain licensed professionals
  • work that calls for independent clinical judgment

That last point shows up in daily work. When a task requires you to decide alone what care a patient needs, it sits outside what may be delegated to you.

Learn the clinical skills before you start

Most people pick up injections, blood draws, and medication orders in a medical assistant program. Programs that publish a clear length often run about 9 months at career schools reporting such figures. The shortest program takes 2 months; the longest takes 32.

How long the program runsNumber of career schools
6 months or under19
7–9 months257
10–12 months59
Over 12 months43

Price varies by the kind of school. Across 392 career schools, the median published price for a full program is $17,257, which includes tuition, fees, and books. Among 437 public colleges, a year of full-time study carries a median in-district tuition and fees of $4,346.

Accreditation happens when an outside organization reviews the program. We list 1,094 programs, and 484 of them carry accreditation from CAAHEP or ABHES. Online programs hold their classes at a distance, yet supervised clinical practice always happens in person. Just 30 programs allow the coursework to be finished through distance education, and 14 of those 30 carry accreditation.
